Baby elephant killed by truck





  Gerik: A male elephant aged between four and five years old was found dead on the side of the road in Jalan Raya Timur Barat (JRTB) Gerik - Jeli near the Banun Resettlement Plan (RPS) junction near here is believed to have been run over by  a vehicle around 5 am  Yesterday.


  The director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), Yusoff Shariff said, it is believed that the elephant calf involved was run over or run over by a truck or bus.  However, as of yesterday afternoon, neither party came forward to make a confession about the incident.


  He said the carcass of a male elephant that sustained injuries to various parts of the body, however, had been moved and buried in a nearby forest area by members of the Gerik Wildlife Office at noon yesterday.


  "We believe that elephants between four and five years old were run over or run over by a truck or bus, not by a small car," he said when contacted by WhatsApp last night.


  Yusoff said that, as stated before, Perhilitan expects road users to be more careful when passing through forest areas, especially at JRTB Gerik - Jeli.


  He said the area is well known as a habitat for wildlife, especially elephants that are often found crossing the road because in some areas.


  Perhilitan, he said, had installed several warning signs along the road.
